Club Upgrades

As a result of their fantastic Winter League victories in Rushbrooke last year, John Finnegan & Stephen Roche jumped up to Grade 3, Cathryn Casey and Christine O’ Sullivan moved up the ranks to Grade 5. Well done to Alan O’Sullivan & Ross O’Connor whose successes in both Winter & Summer Leagues also saw them rise up the ranks to Grade 3.

Munster Champions

A Winter League final like no other…in July!

After months of trying to stay active in their living rooms and gardens and a mere two weeks training on court, two Tralee teams G4 Mixed and G6 Ladies battled in the summer sun to finish what they had started in October of last year, both teams winning with a fantastic result of 3-1.

Congratulations to the G6 Ladies team Hannah(capt), Niamh, Cathryn & Christine and massive thanks to the super subs who togged out over the winter season: Roberta, Amanda & Claire Salmon

The G4 mixed team Nuala(capt), Ciara, John & Stephen fought late into the evening to bring home the cup. Big thanks to Caoimhe for subbing along the way.

Munster Winter League

After fighting an extreme battle during this year’s winter league campaign, enduring beastly weather conditions, many road trips, hours of playing and practicing, it was fantastic to see how well all of our teams (players and subs) represented along the way.  Massive thank you to all!

Semi Finalists

We narrowly missed out on making the Munster Winter League finals; our fantastic grade 4 team fought a hard fight, but came up against very tough opponents during the semis, whilst injury took our mighty grade 6 team out of the league, an extremely unfortunate way to go out.  What a great effort and huge achievement, well done.

On behalf of TTC we are extremely proud of all the teams who took part, we know it’s not easy to commit.  We wish all teams much success during the Summer Cup.

Tralee Tennis Club Championships 2018 with Eamon Costello (Kerry) Ltd

80 matches / 7 events / 4 courts / 8 days…and one hell of a do…it was an action packed week.

We have just celebrated one of our most successful championships as a club.  From our newest & bravest to our most seasoned members, the level of tennis was superb from start to finish in all levels.  Despite quite a battering from storm Ali, all players were eager to get out and get the job done.  It’s fair to say we had four seasons in one week:  sun; gale force winds and flash flooding.  Although conditions were quite wet at times, it didn’t stop the championships or dampen our spirits.  Well done to everyone who battled through.

Huge appreciation to our wonderful Lady’s captains Mags O’Grady and Siobhan O’Nualláin who organised this championship down to the finest detail. The introduction of a plate competition meant more work for the captains, but more games for the players!  They worked tirelessly on scheduling all the groups through the implementation of the new tournament software, which was a great asset and success according to the overwhelming positive feedback received from our members. Our Chairperson Gemma Lougheed updated the system on a daily basis, while our hardworking committee and members took it in turn to keep both the players and the dedicated spectators fed and entertained.  It was a fantastic team effort by all. Siobhan & Ciaran got the party started early on semi-finals night with their famous tasty curry keeping us warm. The whole event was rounded off with a beautiful prize giving at an end of summer celebration in the Ashe Hotel on finals day.

Thank you to Eamon Costello (Kerry) Ltd for their very kind sponsorship throughout the championships, which made all of this possible.  As a club we greatly appreciate it.

Ross Jewellers Ladies’ Day

Tralee Tennis Club hosted their annual Ladies’ Day last Saturday which was very generously sponsored by Ross Jewellers. It was a fantastic day from start to finish, with the club decorated in style for this very elegant event. Banners, beautiful bunting and flower baskets in bloom were on display with a perfectly dressed function room for the evening prize giving. All the ladies turned up in their glamorous tennis attire looking dazzling and very cosmopolitan.

The weather was mostly glorious with the rain holding off and everyone was in fantastic form while some great afternoon of high-level tennis got underway.
The competition was divided into three groups, Ruby, Sapphire and Emeralds in keeping with our lovely Sponsors Ross Jewellers. There was really exciting tennis from all three groups. The standard was incredible; some matches were extremely tight and entertaining to watch. As the finalists of each group battled it out on court for the title, spectators watched from the side-lines and balcony cheering on with excitement.

Following the fabulous tennis, there was a beautiful meal awaiting all the ladies in the decorative function room. This was a very welcome treat, greatly organised by our fantastic Lady Captains Mags O’Grady and Siobhán O’Nualláin. Concluding the event were spectacular prizes of stunning Jewellery, presented by Heather O’Sullivan and Sandrene Brassil of John Ross Jewellers.

Winners of the Ruby group were Kate Falvey and Christine O’Sullivan, runners up Roberta Kneeshaw and Alison Walsh. Winners of Sapphire were Jill Fitzgerald and Sorcha Finnegan, with runners up Elaine Larkin and Miriam Rohan/Fiona Brick (subbing). The winners of Emerald were Jean Hollywood and Kate Guerin, runners up Margret Shea and Claire Salmon. The entire event was a smashing success and fantastically organised. All the ladies are looking forward to their next event.

May Mixed Doubles Day Event

The weather was very kind to us for the first day event of the Tralee Tennis Club season. The May mixed doubles was a great success with all players involved enjoying themselves on and off the court. Players were limbering up from 12 noon, play got under way around 12:45 and finished around 17:00. While taking a well earned break from play everyone got to enjoy some lovely threats supplied by all the players (thank you to all for a great effort) and some delicious soup, brown bread & the good old reliable toasted sandwich. There were also some lovely fresh strawberries and ice cream for dessert! Some players suggested that their intake of food had adversely affected their play 🙂

Tennis wise, 28 players took part with only one all female pair required so things balanced out nicely. We had a “16 Person Section” and a “12 Person Section”.

“12 Person Section”
In this section a round robin format was played with 4 rounds of 7 games played. Due to time constraints on some players we went straight into a Main Final and Plate Final out of the round robin.
Main Final Winners: Ayshe Djemal & Martin O Sullivan
Main Final Runners-Up: Sally Ryle & Louis Ryle
Plate Final Winners: Delores O Callaghan & Guillaume PY
Plate Final Runners-Up: Claire Salmon – Araiza & Anthony Barry

“16 Person Section”
This section was broken into 2 sub groups that played out a round robin. After the round robin, the 2 groups mixed into a Main Draw Semi-Finals & Final /Plate Draw Semi-Finals & Final.
Main Draw Winners: Niamh O’ Hora & Hamid Mustafa
Main Draw Runners-Up: Jill Fitzgerald & Timmy Hennessey
Plate Draw Winners: Mary B Murphy & Ray Moroney
Plate Draw Runners-Up: Ann Courtney & Gerry Jeewoonarain

Fantastic tennis throughout the day, well done to all for taking part!

The captains would like to thank all the players that joined them for the day and the members that popped in to say hello. It was great to see such a good mix of newer members and long standing members taking part. There was some great tennis played across all the courts and everyone was in good form which makes for a great day in the club. Finally, thank you to everyone who helped on the day with set up, making sandwiches, serving desserts and the dreaded tidy up, you know who you are!

Looking forward to the next event!

1st social event of the year!!!

Our first ever Tennis, Pizza & Games night was a smashing success!   The evening was brilliantly organised by the captains Mags, Siobhan and Richie. A big thanks to everyone who came along on the night, it was a packed house. The sun was blazing on court; we couldn’t have picked a better day to kick off our first event.

The draw consisted of 2 groups with 16 players in each group, with a couple of super subs popping in when needed! There were 4 rounds of 5 games. Players arrived for warm up from 7pm, and play got underway at 7:40pm with super exciting tennis until 10:15pm.
For those not on the court, there were plenty of fun board games and some very competitive table tennis in the clubhouse. Outside, spectators were treated to extremely entertaining tennis on court!  Well done to all the players.

Munster Winter League 2018

We would like to congratulate members of the Tralee Tennis Club who played extremely competitive tennis throughout their Munster Winter League and battled their way to the semi finals.

Our Mixed 2 Team had a tough and close battle with Nenagh and were 2-1 up going into the remaining two games but the Nenagh Team were very strong and won 3-2 overall. We would like to say a huge well done to James O’Brien, Timmy Hennessy, Sorcha Finnegan & Miriam Rohan. This is the first ever Grade 2 Team representing Tralee Tennis club in the Winter League so congratulations to all on that piece of history.

Our Ladies 4 Team came up against a very experienced and strong Bishopstown Team. With their home support the tennis was raised and despite playing close sets our Ladies’ were defeated on the day. The score bears no reflection on the hard battle the ladies fought. Well done Mags O’Grady, Gemma Lougheed, Nuala Finnegan & Siobhán O’Nualláin. They all fought very hard but unfortunately didn’t make it to the finals.

Tralee was represented fantastically in the Munster Winter League, well done everyone. We look forward to the Summer Cup where we hope to do as well if not better!

Operation Rejuvenation

Tralee Tennis Club has seen a fantastic rejuvenation in recent months.  Our Clubhouse turned green in more ways than one.  We were delighted to receive a sports capital grant from the Minister of Tourism and Sports to help with the upgrade of our club.

Sports Capital pic

From this achievement, we were able to install new LED lights, which overtime will significantly save cost and most importantly energy.

Our courts were rejuvenated with the packing of fresh sand and leveling.

As a club we strive to maintain a high standard to ensure the best quality for our members.
